(3) In international forums discussing and dealing with seafarer issues, represent the interests of members and negotiate with governments and trade unions of various countries. The focus of the federation's work is on labor standards, often dealing with trade unions, and its main task is to coordinate and present the employer's views.
The International Maritime Federation also provides advisory services to the International Maritime Organization, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, and the United Nations Economic and Social Council. In the International Maritime Organization, the International Maritime Federation is mainly concerned with the staffing and training of crew members, and participated in the development of the 1978 International Convention on Standards for Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping of Seafarers.
The activities of the International Maritime Federation also include crew salaries, health and coordination with trade unions, crew staffing and organization, etc. The International Maritime Federation mainly seeks the welfare of shipowners, but it actively participates in the drafting of important International Labour Organization conventions and resolutions related to the conditions of employment, health training, and welfare of seafarers in cooperation with the International Labour Organization and the International Maritime Organization, playing an important role in the development of the shipping industry.
